A Presidential Visit

We had a busy weekend on the home farm but this was made easier by a few super weeks of good weather which allowed us to harvest our first cut of silage.

The big news however, was the visit of the President of Ireland, Michael D Higgins to the Uisneach Bealtaine Celebration. We were honoured to welcome the President to this important annual event which takes place on a part of our farm known as the Hill of Uisneach. This is an Irish royal site that marks the sacred centre of Ireland.

Watch highlights of this amazing event.

Hill of Uisneach

The enigmatic Hill of Uisneach has played a part in many significant Irish events and is one of the most historic sanctuaries in the world. From the summit (which is under 600 feet above sea level) you get the most incredible views of hills and mountains. On a clear day 20 counties are visible.  Some of the surviving monuments and relics here date back to Neolithic times.

One of the legends of Uisneach is that it was the location for the first great fire to be lit in Ireland. This great fire became the catalyst for the annual Bealtaine Celebration.

In years gone by it was customary to drive cattle through two fires. This act was supposed to shield them from diseases and accidents. Fortunately, times have changed and our cattle can rely on modern farming techniques and medicines to keep them healthy.
